Fine line black tattoo of a leaping hare above a small rose and sprigs of leaves on pale skin.

Leaping hare with botanical sprigs

Fine line · Black and grey · Photo

A hare is shown mid-leap in profile, facing left, with a small rose and leafy sprigs forming a loose wreath beneath and around it. The linework is thin and precise, with fine hatching and stippled shading on the hare's body and ears. The design is in black ink only and sits centrally against a plain, pale background.

Sit closer, the fire's only good for another hour, and I'll not tell this twice. The hare came over the ridge at Haddon Cross the spring the last tractor rusted through, running flat out with a sprig of hawthorn clamped in her teeth, which is how you knew she'd been somewhere with green in it.

Nessa Rook kept the seed tin on a shelf above the stove. The only thing in it worth trading was one rose hip she'd dried in an old envelope, and she'd not parted with it for a sack of flour or a dead man's boots. The hare came to her back step at dusk, and she swore afterwards that it looked at the tin before it looked at her.

She followed it. Down past the chapel, through the orchard where the apples had gone to black stone, the hare stopped every few yards to nip a fresh sprig off the hedgerow and drop it on the path like crumbs. At the old well it halted, turned its head, and waited. Nessa knelt, pushed aside the nettles, and pressed her palm to the earth. It was damp. It was the first damp she'd felt in a year.

She planted the hip there that night and wove the sprigs round the well stone the way the hare had laid them. By midsummer there was a rose the size of a fist, and the hare sat beside it with its ears up, as if it had been paid. That's why we don't mow that corner. Mind your feet on the way out, and leave the tin where it is.
