Geometric giraffe head on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large black tattoo of a giraffe head, drawn with angular, faceted outlines and fine parallel hatching on the ears, muzzle and eyes. The neck is filled with solid black irregular patches that suggest giraffe markings. The design is in black ink only and sits centrally on the upper arm against a plain pale background and a grey sleeve.

Now you'll want to hear about the giraffe, and you'll have to sit still for it, because she does not care for fidgeting. Nobody in Skerrow Quay called her by a name to her face, though Jonah Pell's grandmother called her Tall Lady. She came ashore in the net of the Brightwater in the spring of the bad herring year, wrapped in a sheet of tarpaulin. When Jonah pulled the canvas back he found a wooden head with a long flat face cut all in angles, the way a glazier might carve if he'd been half asleep and brilliant.

The cook wanted to burn her in the galley stove. Jonah carried her home instead. He noticed the ears, pointed like folded paper, and the fine lines knifed into her cheeks and eyes, close as rain on a window. Down her neck were dark pitch patches, uneven, like the shadows the rocks make at low water. He set her on the sill facing the harbour mouth, and that was where she stayed for a season, and the boats came home every night without a scratch.
Then came the October gale. The Brightwater was three hours late, and Maren Pell walked the wall with a lantern until the lamp guttered out. When Jonah came in at dawn, soaked to the skin, the head was no longer at the window. It had been turned to face the door.
Maren went down to the slipway at first light and found the Brightwater's gear piled dry as bone on the stones, and nobody aboard her. Jonah says the head had been looking at the sea all night, and by morning it had turned to the stairs, as if it wanted someone to climb up and sit down to supper. That is the whole of it. Mind the third step on your way out, and keep your back to the wind.
