Stag head with triangles on a calf
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A stag's head with long antlers and ears is drawn in bold black sketchy linework, with shading built from hatched strokes on the face and neck. Thin outlined triangles sit above the antlers and beneath the neck, framing the animal in a geometric composition. The tattoo is black and grey on pale skin, set against a blurred green and dark background.

The snow had been coming down since the Tuesday before Martinmas, and by the second week of December the ewes were standing in the lee of the barn with their backs to the wind. Maud Caddick kept the feed sacks under the tarp and a lamp lit in the dairy so the pipes wouldn't freeze. She did not look at the wood above the top field, where the stag had been seen.

It came down on the fourth night, stepping out of the trees as if the frost belonged to it. Its antlers spread like a dead hedge and its head was held high above the drifts. Her father had told her that a stag in winter was the hill's bookkeeper, that it remembered every debt a family owed the land and came to collect one. Maud had laughed at him once. She did not laugh now, not with the chalk lines she had drawn on the barn door: one triangle above, one below, one either side, the way he had shown her to mark a boundary no fox would cross.
The stag stood at the gate and waited, its breath hanging in the cold. Maud carried the last bale out on the barrow, set it down in the snow, and walked back to the house without turning round. Behind her the gate creaked once. When she woke at dawn the field was white and unbroken, except for a line of hoofprints that came up to the chalk on the door and stopped there, and went no further.
The ewes lambed in March, every one of them, and nobody ever found the stag's bones. Each winter after, Maud drew the three triangles again on the barn door, and each winter the hoofprints came up through the snow to the chalk and turned back.
