Mountain and moon geometric forearm tattoo

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A mountain peak sits inside a diamond shape at the lower half of the design, with a stippled moon above it. Thin intersecting circles, triangles and straight lines frame the upper section, and a small concentric circle sits to the right of the moon. The mountain and moon are built from dense dots and fine shading in black ink, while the geometric outlines are crisp single lines, with a plain white and black background.

The rope had been Aunt Morwen's idea, not yours, and by ten past seven you had already tied it to the wrong gatepost twice. Outside the chapel the frost hadn't lifted from the lane, and Tom was somewhere up the scree with the old theodolite, because he had sworn he would take one last bearing on Carn Dduach before he married you. You let him. You had spent eleven years letting him measure things, and you had learned that the measuring was how he said he was happy.

He came down with his knees grey and his fingers blue, holding his field notebook open at a page of circles he had pencilled over the drive. Every line, he explained, was a sightline from a different year. Three triangles where the summit, the church spire and the quarry crane met. A small ring for the level bubble. Above it all, the moon, which he had shaded with a fine pen so the dots were almost invisible unless you tilted the page to the window. 'It won't be full tonight,' he said, 'but it'll be close enough to count.'

Inside, the vicar read about the things that hold their shape under weight, and you stood beside him with the register in one hand and the bouquet crushing in the other. Halfway through the vows you caught Tom glancing past your shoulder at the window, where the peak was pale against the afternoon. He had taken that bearing so many times it had worn a groove in his memory, and yet he still looked at it as if it might have moved.

Later, when the chapel had emptied and the caterers were rattling trays in the vestry, you found him outside with the theodolite on its tripod, peering down the sight. He waved you over and let you look. The mountain sat dead centre in the crosshairs, exactly where it had always been. Beside it, in the little glass window of the level, the bubble drifted slowly to the middle and stayed there, which Tom said was what a true line did once nobody was pushing it.
