Butterfly and flower vine on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot in a cork flip-flop shows a tattoo of a butterfly at the ankle with a trailing vine of small flowers and leaves curling down across the top of the foot. The linework is fine and the shading is soft grey with some darker accents, and a few petals appear faintly bluish. The subject sits diagonally across the frame on a terracotta tiled floor.

Dear Ada,

The pit wheel stopped on Tuesday and nobody in Hetton Lea has said a word about it since, which tells you more than any notice pinned to the chapel door. Father sat in the yard all afternoon with his cap in his hands. Mam has been wrapping the good cups in newspaper as if we are moving house, though we have nowhere to move to.
I walked up past the old spoil heap this morning to the bank where the bramble grows over the fence. There was a butterfly there, grey-brown and torn at one wing, resting on the bramble as though it had forgotten where it meant to go. Small bluish flowers hung off the vine all along the top of the wall, and I thought of you on that boat, which is daft, I know.
Here is what I should have said at the station. I am not ashamed that you went. Take the money Mr Rowell offered for the passage and do not send it back. Write when you land and tell me what the trees look like over there, the proper ones, not the stunted things we have up here.
The butterfly lifted when I got close, one wing dragging, and went over the wall toward the colliery. I hope it finds somewhere with less coal dust in the air. Your loving sister, Nell.
