Script verse running down the outer foot
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single line of black cursive script follows the outer edge of a foot from the ankle towards the toes, reading a quotation from a biblical verse. The strokes are thin and even, with a flourished capital at the start. The photograph is in colour and shows the tattoo on pale skin against a grey paved surface, with a second foot and a small toe ring also visible.

Ada Pell had carried the loaves out to the charcoal burners every Thursday since the winter her father's knees gave out, and every Thursday the lantern gave her exactly as much light as her next step needed and not a yard more. Her mother called it stingy. The vicar's wife called it a wonder. Ada called it the lantern and kept her eyes on the ground.

The path ran through Hollin Wood from the last cottage to the clearing where the kilns smoked. Roots crossed it like knuckles. Owls kept their own counsel. Beyond the stile a boy from the village once swore the path went on without anyone walking it, and that the lamp only showed him his own boots, so he turned back and left the bread on the stile for the foxes.
On the Thursday after the first hard frost, the lamp guttered at the brook. Ada stood still. She could hear the water and nothing else, and for a long while she thought she would have to go home. Then she set one foot down on the flat stone she knew was there, and the lamp, grudgingly, showed her the next.
She reached the clearing near dawn with the loaves warm under her shawl. The burner, Tom Greave, looked at the lamp and then at her boots and said nothing, only took the bread. Ada walked home by daylight, and only then noticed how far she had come on so little light, and how the frost on the path held the print of every careful step.
