You'll want to hear about the girl in the grey gloves. She came to Thursday rehearsals for a month without dancing a step, just sat on the radiator with a notebook, copying out the words of every song we played. On the last night she tore out a page and pressed it into my hand. Her writing ran in thin, even loops with no shading and no crossings out, as if each letter had been practised until it stopped trembling.

The page held only a line from a song nobody has recorded yet, something about a long road and a lamp left burning. She told me she was catching the early train to Hull and would not be back, that her mother had found her a place in a shop. "Keep it," she said. "Somebody should carry the words who can't carry the tune."

I did keep it. Tonight I found it folded inside my cornet case, tucked behind the mouthpiece, and the ink has bled a little into the crease so the last word seems to lean towards the door. I'm going to play that line on Saturday, slow, the way she liked it. Your loving brother, Frank.
