Fine line tattoo of a heart with an angel wing and halo on one side and a devil wing and pointed tail on the other, placed on the lower leg near the ankle.

Angel and devil heart on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A single continuous line forms a heart whose lower end curls into a pointed devil's tail. On the left, a pale red outlined angel wing and halo sit beside the heart, while on the right a black devil wing extends from its top. The linework is fine and even, with the angel elements in red and the devil elements in black on smooth, healed-looking skin.

Sit nearer, the lot of you, and mind the sawdust, it is all the show has left to keep the wind out. Right, then. Ask anybody who was with Harrow's Travelling Marvels in the wet summer of nineteen fifty-one and they will tell you the same thing: there were two aerialists and one wire, and the wire was never once let go of.

Pell and Annick Dorn came over from the ports with a single length of steel cable, coiled like a sleeping snake at the bottom of the wagon. Pell wore red, Annick wore black, and the crowd called them the Saint and the Sinner because they never argued where anyone could see. Every night they climbed the rigging together and dropped a loop of that cable into a heart over the ring, and the whole town gasped at it. Then came the tail. The last loose end curled off the bottom of the heart like a question nobody wanted answered.

Then the money went. The big top sagged, the ringmaster drank his wages, and in October the bank in Grantham took the wagons. Pell wanted to sell the wire for scrap. Annick wanted to hang it from the old elm by the river. They did neither. On the last night they climbed up together, one on each side of the heart, and walked out until they met at its point, and the rigging creaked like a ship giving up.

The wire is still down there, if you know where the river bends. Red on one side, black on the other, and a tail at the bottom that nobody has ever managed to cut. Go and look, if you like. Mind the mud. I will sit here with the fire and wait for you to come back.
