Teal ribbon and swirl heart on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A black outline of a heart filled with delicate scrolling swirls sits on the inner wrist, with a teal ribbon looping through its right side. The linework is thin and even, and the swirls are drawn as open curls with no shading. Teal fills the ribbon with a slightly speckled finish, while the heart and swirls stay in black ink on a light skin tone against a dark background.

Tamsin had been up since two, and the ovens were the only warm thing in the lane. She shaped the last of the batch while flour hung in the lamplight like sifted snow, and the radio on the windowsill murmured about frost on the Pennines.

The heart loaf was her father's trick. For thirty years he had scored open curls into the crown of every tin loaf with a razor blade held at a slant, so the crust would split and lift as it baked. Today the Hebden show judges would look at her bread the way a jeweller looks at a stone, and she had practised the curls on flour paper until her wrist ached.
At half five she lifted the cooled loaf onto the board and tied a length of teal ribbon around its middle, the same ribbon that had been coiled in the biscuit tin since the Christmas before last. Her hands were steady because they had to be. A milk float rattled past the shop window, and somewhere a dog barked twice and gave up.
Mrs Okafor from the parish council turned the loaf in her hands, tapped its base, and studied the swirls for a long moment before she reached for her pen. "Who scored this?" she asked.
"My dad taught me," Tamsin said. "I just kept the curls open." The steam rose from the crust and the ribbon lifted with it, and for once she did not check the clock.
