Black and grey roses on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a cluster of open roses in different angles, with dark leaves and stems running between them. The petals are shaded with soft greys and fine stippled texture, while the leaves have sharp, dark linework and highlights. The roses fill the arm from shoulder to elbow, with black and grey tones only.

The cuttings arrived over the ridge in a feed sack, wrapped in wet newspaper that had gone to pulp by the time Dell's truck reached the pumps. Nobody on the Barstow stretch had grown anything in eleven years, and I wanted something to look at besides the sun bleaching the pie case. I planted them in cut-down oil drums behind the forecourt and told myself it was a hobby.

They sulked for a month. Then one Tuesday there were five buds, shut tight as fists, and by the weekend they had opened into roses the colour of a storm front, petals curled back at the edges as if they had heard something they didn't like. The leaves came in sharp and dark, serrated like hacksaw blades, and the stems ran between the drums in a tangle that made the lorry drivers stop and squint through their windscreens.

On the third Sunday a woman in a grey Buick pulled in for water and stood looking at the roses for a long time without asking the price. She said her husband had driven this road for thirty years and she had never once seen a flower out here. I cut the best stem for her, then another, and she paid in folded notes and a Folgers tin of coins she said was the last of his.

By the end of the month the drums were bare, just stalks and a few stubborn leaves, and I found I didn't mind. The sun came up over the ridge and the dust settled on the pie case again. Somewhere past Needles, I supposed, a jam jar on a windowsill held the only colour I had ever grown.
