The estate agent wanted the walled garden cleared by Friday, so you took the secateurs down to the bottom bed, where the buddleia had gone grey and brittle with old seedheads. Nobody had pruned it since your aunt Marjorie stopped climbing the stepladder. The gravel was furred with moss, and the sundial had lost its gnomon to a winter of frost.

A swallowtail came down out of the heat before noon and settled on the warm brick by the potting shed. Black, with the trailing edges cut into fine teeth like lace left out in the rain, it opened and closed its wings slowly, as if counting something. You had seen one like it in the photographs in Marjorie's biscuit tin of letters, pinned under a drift of foxed envelopes, and you had not thought about the tin since the funeral.
You set the secateurs down. Every envelope in the tin was addressed to Marjorie from a Mrs Lorraine Tate of Dorking, who wrote each spring about a butterfly house she planned to build and never did. Marjorie had answered every one in pencil, promising seeds. You found the last reply in the potting shed drawer, stamped and addressed but never posted, with a single line underneath: The black ones always come back to the wall we built for them.
The swallowtail lifted, circled the buddleia once and settled in a gap in the mortar where Marjorie had once pressed a seed packet. You left the brambles standing and went for the trowel. By five the wall was sound, the packet was tucked back into its crack, and the black wings had folded shut against the warm brick like a letter read twice and put away.
