Two butterflies on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two black butterflies sit side by side on the inner forearm, the larger one with a smaller one set above and to the right. The wings are filled with fine dots and stippled texture, with dark bodies and thin antennae. The image is shot in soft focus against a plain blue-grey background, with the skin tone and ink shown in muted, even light.

Dear Frances,

I am not coming to the reunion on Saturday, though I have already bought the card for it. You will go, you always did, and you will stand by the squash table telling everyone about the Cambridge job while Pauline's sponge sits in its tin going dry. Tell her it was dry in 1987 too.

Mostly I am writing about the jar. Do you remember Mr Pryce's biology cupboard, and the Kilner with the muslin lid? We took two Marbled Whites off the scrubby edge of Wendover Hill that June, the big one and the little one that never flew straight. Pryce pinned them flat on card for the nature wall, and the small one tore on the pin, so he let you keep it because you cried loudest.

I found them last month in Mum's sideboard, in a Swan Vestas box with your name on the lid in biro. Both wings were still there, dotted all over like someone had shaken pepper across the paper, and the black at the edges had not faded at all. I sat at her kitchen table for an hour before I could open the drawer properly.

I have decided to keep the big one, which seems fair, since I was the one who held the jar steady. I am posting you the small one in the matchbox, because it was always yours to carry, and because I would rather you stood in that hall on Saturday with something to show for the summer we were ten. Bring it. We can see whether the squash is still warm.

Love, Jean
