Two butterflies on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two butterflies with outlined and lightly shaded wings sit on the inner wrist, with the larger one at lower left and the smaller one at upper right. The linework is fine and dark, with soft grey shading across the wing panels and spotted detail near the wing edges. The photograph is black and white against a dark background, and a hand with dark nail polish is visible at the top of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The 6.42 has been cancelled again, so I am writing this on the bench under the clock at Harrowmere, where the tea trolley has not come since Easter and the pigeons have stopped pretending to like me. You will remember Mr Pell at the summer fair, the man with the tin of enamel paints who swore that a pair of butterflies travels better than one. The big one always knows where the small one has got to, he said, and the small one always wanders off to find the way back. I thought he was selling us a line. I am beginning to think he was selling us a timetable.

The signal dropped an hour ago and has not lifted since. A porter in a green waistcoat came past twice carrying a lantern he did not need, and a little girl in wellingtons counted the lamp posts out loud until her mother made her stop. Nobody seems to know which platform the train will use, so I have been watching the lost property office, where someone has hung a single glove on a hook with a card that says Unclaimed. It makes me think of the lamp in your kitchen, and the paper wings we pinned above it.

So I have made a decision, and I want you to hear it from me first. I am going to take the small one, the restless one that keeps circling back to the platform edge, and I am going to let it lead. You keep the big one by the lamp. It will be steadier there and it does not care for draughts. I will send a postcard from wherever the line finally goes, and you can check it against the timetable on your wall, which I know you have never once trusted.

Love, Josie
