Butterfly outline on a foot
Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A butterfly is drawn as a single brown outline on the upper foot, with the wings spread and the body and antennae visible. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the wing veins are shown with simple lines. The skin is pale and lit warmly, with a yellow background and a pair of fingers with dark nail polish in the top right corner.

You reach the col before the cloud does, which is the only reason the letter arrives at all. The postman's mule has refused the last switchback for three days, so the envelope sits in your coat with the smell of wet wool and an address in a hand you do not know. Inside is one sheet and one drawing: a butterfly in a single brown line, wings open, antennae lifted as though it is listening for weather.

Nobody on the pass has seen one this high since the snow came early. The old shepherd at the refuge, Ansel Duerr, tells you the butterflies that cross the ridge in September are the ones who lost their way from the lower meadows, and they settle on the first warm stone they find. He says a line like that is how the mountain keeps its count. You ask who drew it. He shrugs and says a surveyor, a woman who drew only what she could walk to.
You spend the night with the sheet propped against the stove. Morning comes thin and white. By noon you have found the stone, a flat grey slab under the cairn, and on it a butterfly, real, folded shut and brown as a dead leaf. You tap it with one finger. It opens slowly into exactly the shape on the paper, wings spread wide enough to cover the stone.
Then it lifts, and you understand the drawing was never a map of the ridge. It was a pattern for leaving. You fold the letter into your pocket and go down the far side the way the butterfly went, following the lines of its veins until the pass is behind you.
