Butterfly tattoo on the nape of the neck
Traditional · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A large butterfly with bold black outlines, solid fills and dotted detailing sits across the nape of the neck, with curled antennae rising above it. Below, a partly visible geometric piece with radiating lines and a lotus-like shape extends toward the upper back. The image is shot from behind in black and grey, with dark hair pinned up and ear piercings visible.

You are nineteen when the Queen of Hallowmere orders a butterfly painted on the sealed gate of the north tower, and nobody else in the workshop will mix the black for it. The last painter who tried lost two fingers to the frost. So the commission falls to you, a salt-flat girl with a box of brushes and a grandmother's rule that every line must be sure before it is wet.

You work through the winter. You draw the wings first, outlines thick as a thumb, then fill them solid as midnight. Along the edges you dot the eyes with a quill so fine it seems to breathe. The antennae you curl like the tips of bracken. Each evening the court astronomers climb the scaffold to inspect your work and say nothing, and each morning the paint has dried a shade darker than you left it.
On the last night, the marsh wind rattles the shutters and you notice the wings have begun to lift from the plaster, not with paint but with a kind of weight, as though the ink remembers flight. You climb with the final dot loaded on your brush. Below, the queen stands wrapped in grey wool, watching the sky instead of you.
You do not finish the dot. You set the brush in its pot and leave the last eye open, and the butterfly tears itself free of the gate and goes out over the frozen reeds toward the salt flats, the way you came. Below, the queen laughs once and orders the gate left exactly as it is. Even now, when the north wind comes off the marsh, one blank eye on the tower looks for you.
