Butterfly wing tattoo across a bare back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A large butterfly tattoo covers much of the back, with its wings spreading outwards from the spine and shoulder blade. The design combines bold black outlines, fine swirling linework and shaded grey areas, with orange and brown tones in the lower wing. The background shows a tree trunk, green foliage and blue sky, and the subject has long dreadlocks with red tips.

Rain had been falling on the Saturday market since dawn, and Marta Quill had long stopped pretending the awning kept anything dry. She unpicked the knot on the last crate of silk with cold fingers while the stallholders along Tanners Row shouted prices over the drumming canvas.

The silk had come from a dyer in Lowmoor who worked only in three colours: ochre, rust and the soot-black he ground from oak galls. Marta had bought the whole lot on credit against a promise. Each length was stencilled with a pattern she had drawn at fourteen, when her grandmother still kept bees: a wing spreading from a single fold, the veins looping back into spirals, the lower edge broken into rust-coloured eyes that seemed to look back at whoever held them up.
A woman in a yellow mac stopped at the stall and lifted a scarf to the light. The rain made the grey outer panels look like smoke, and the orange at the hem caught the lamp from the fishmonger's. "Where does the pattern come from?" she asked. Marta told her about the hive that swarmed onto the orchard wall the week her grandmother died, and how the swarm had settled into the exact shape of that drawing before drifting away over the slate roofs.
The woman bought the scarf and paid in coins warm from her pocket. Marta folded the rest back into the crate and found, underneath, one length she had never stencilled. Its wing was blank, pale as paper, waiting for a hand to decide where the first line should go.
