A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The road over Hollin Pass was closed by the first snow of that year, and Maud Ferrier had two days to get her father's goats down to the valley before the drifts came off the ridge. Before she left she tied a length of violet ribbon to the cairn at the summit, as her mother had, so that anyone climbing behind her would know the way was still open.

On the second morning the wind dropped and the air filled with butterflies. They were a strange kind, their wings banded in violet and teal with pale spots like lamplight on water, and they rose out of the snow as if the mountain were breathing them out. The goats would not walk into them. Maud stood still with her crook and let them settle on her sleeves, and she thought of the word her grandfather had painted on the lintel of the byre, HOPE, in letters the rain had been wearing away for forty years.

The butterflies led her down a gully she had never seen, where the snow was thin and a stream was already loud beneath it. At the bottom stood a shepherd's hut with its door open and a lamp burning inside, though she had not known anyone kept a hut there. The goats went in first. Maud counted them twice, then a third time to be sure.

When she came back up in spring to fetch the ribbon, it had been tied to a new cairn lower down, and a second ribbon hung beside it, knotted by hands she did not know. The butterflies had gone. Their wings had left a faint blue dust on the stones, and she carried some of it down in her palm.
