The lift on the east corridor has stuck again, so you take the stairs with the linen trolley and a flask of tea going cold on its handle. It is twenty to four. Ward 7 has its lamps turned down to amber, and the sluice hums like a fridge that has forgotten what it keeps.

Sister Adeyemi catches you at the station with a folded card between two fingers. Her grandson drew it for a man in bed twelve, she says, a man who has asked for nothing all week. The word is written in brush-pen capitals that thin out at the ends, and the p drops below the line like a fishing weight. Two feathered arrows run under it, both pointing right, towards the ward doors and the car park beyond.

Mr Halloran is awake when you wheel in the clean sheets. He is seventy-nine and has been a signalman on the Bramley line for forty years, and he reads the arrows the way he once read a board. 'Which way is that pointing, then?' he asks. You tell him towards the doors. He shakes his head. 'Towards the window, love. Look where the points are set.' You look. Through the glass, past the car park, the first depot lights are coming on, one bay at a time.

You leave the card propped against his water jug and push the trolley back down the corridor. At the end, the doors swing open on their own, the way they always do before anyone reaches them, and you go through them still holding the flask, which has gone cold, and the sky over the depot has started to thin.
