Purple ribbon with angel wings and script

Fine line · Mixed · Flash

A purple awareness ribbon with the word Survivor written along its length sits between two outstretched feathered wings. Two lines of script, reading Say goodbye to yesterday and Say hello to tomorrow, arc around the top and bottom of the design. The wings are drawn in fine black linework with light shading, and the ribbon is filled in flat purple, centred on a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The packet boat Marigold left Port Ellery with forty sheep, two priests and a girl called Ysolde Penhallow, who had been told by the mate that the sea keeps no accounts. She stood at the stern with a length of purple silk knotted round her wrist. Her grandmother had dyed it in a copper pot behind the fish shed, and nobody aboard asked her what it was for.

On the nineteenth day the wind backed into the north and the hull began to groan like a cow in a bog. Water came over the rail in green sheets. The mate went below and did not come up. Ysolde climbed the mizzen shrouds because the rope was there and she was not yet ready to be frightened, and at the top, where the sky was the colour of wet slate, two white wings came down out of the cloud and folded over her like a sail.

The wings did not speak in words, but she knew what they wanted. They wanted the yesterday she carried: the cold kitchen, the name read out at the harbour wall, the long quiet after. She opened her hand and let the grief go into the foam. The silk stayed. The wings lifted, and the wind dropped as if someone had shut a door on it.

The Marigold limped into harbour on the twenty-second morning with its sheep alive and its priests quarrelling. Ysolde untied the purple silk at the harbour wall and let the tide take it out, still bright, toward a grey sea that had never kept any accounts.
