The blacksmith's daughter in Harrowgate Vale had a habit of drawing on everything she could reach, so when the old castle on the ridge began to crumble, she took her chalk up there to see what the wind had left of its walls. She asked the shepherd's widow down the lane what the mark meant. The widow said the castle's last lady had lost three sons to the north road and had her smith cut that pattern into every door so that the sorrow would have somewhere to turn and curl instead of crushing the people inside. Nobody believed it, the widow said, until the gate fell and the lady's ghost came walking out to fetch the iron back.
The blacksmith's daughter did not believe in ghosts, but she believed in good iron. She carried the gate down the ridge on a borrowed cart, and in her father's forge she heated it until the scrolls glowed the colour of barley. She hammered the ribbon straight and left the curls as they were.
When the gate was hung at the mill, the miller's boys stopped fighting at the stile, and the lane stopped losing its lambs to the bog. Nobody could say why. The daughter only smiled and went back to her chalk.
