C'est la vie script across the upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the back of a person's neck and upper back, with dark hair pulled up. The words C'est la vie are written in thin, flowing cursive script in a single dark ink. The tattoo sits centrally below the neck on a soft, neutral background, and the lighting is even.

The frost took the last of the windfalls on Tuesday, and the well froze solid overnight, so I have been carrying buckets from the trough like a fishwife. You wrote c'est la vie at the bottom of your last letter, as if it were a shrug you could post. I have been turning it over since. Here it is not a shrug. It is what you say when the hens still need feeding and the sky is the colour of pewter and there is nothing to be done but go out in the dark with the lantern.
Come in spring if you can. I will keep the bottom meadow for you, and the gate will be mended by then, c'est la vie or no.
