Script quote on the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black script quote tattooed across the upper chest, close to the collarbone. The thin, flowing handwritten linework is in a single dark ink with some soft shading in the letterforms. The text sits diagonally across the skin against a grey top and a dark pendant necklace on the left.

Mrs Hollis came to the scrivener's table on a wet Thursday with a sheet of blue paper folded into four and a request she had clearly rehearsed on the stairs. She wanted a line copied out, not composed. Her son had said it to her once, in the back kitchen, after the funeral, and she had not been able to hold the words since. "He said you are what you love, not who loves you," she told him, pressing her gloves flat on the table. "Write it the way it sounded." Tobias Rudd, who had kept his stall in the arcade off the market square for nineteen years, pulled a clean nib from the tin and did as he was asked.

He wrote slowly, because she watched his hand the way some people watch a kettle. The line came out in a looping script he had never bothered to soften for anyone, and when he turned the sheet round she frowned at the slant of it. "It leans too far," she said. "He never leaned." So Tobias wrote it again, straighter, the loops shallower and the tails kept short, and this time she nodded and opened a purse with a broken clasp.
She did not thank him. She folded the paper along its old creases, tucked it inside her coat against the damp, and at the door she stopped as though the rain had asked her something. Tobias heard her say, to nobody in particular, that she supposed it was true enough. Then he wiped the nib, because that was the work, and the next customer was already shaking out an umbrella and asking whether he could write a letter to a bank.
