Cactus in a patterned pot on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A cluster of tall cacti with spiky outlines rises from a round pot decorated with bands of triangles, scallops and stripes. The cacti are shaded in black and grey with stippled texture, while the pot uses red and cream accents. The design is centred on the lower leg against plain skin and a textured floor.

Nell Garrity carried it down the towpath with both hands, the pot banded with red triangles and cream scallops, and set it on the cabin roof where the sun would find it. By June it had grown three arms and a fourth that looked like an afterthought.

Her brother Tom thought it was daft. "It's a boat, not a greenhouse," he said, leaning on the lock beam at Cowroast with a windlass in his fist. He had been writing letters to the council about the moorings for a year and meant to be gone to Lancaster by August. Nell said nothing. She watered the thing every morning from a jam jar, counting the spines the way their mother had once counted stitches.
In July a storm pushed the river up over the towpath, and the boat strained at its ropes all night. In the morning the pot was gone from the roof. Nell found it wedged in the reeds three hundred yards downstream, upright, the cactus still standing, the soil dark and wet around its base. Tom came along the bank, saw it, and laughed for the first time all summer.
"Well," he said, wading out to his knees. "I suppose it's staying, then."
