Saguaro cactus with geometric bands on upper arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A saguaro cactus with a small agave at its base sits centred on the inner upper arm. The cactus is outlined and shaded in black with stippled dot texture, and the arms and spines are picked out in fine detail. Behind it, stacked triangular bands in orange, pink and teal are built up from dots, framing the cactus on a plain red background.

Dear Dennis,

The lift in Hulme was out again when the van came, so the two men carried the crate up eleven floors and swore at every landing. Inside, wrapped in a tea towel and a copy of the Evening News, was the cactus you sent from Tucson. Six years it spent in a shed in Arizona before you posted it, and I'm telling you now it has the look of something that expected to be kept.
I put it on the windowsill facing the car park, which is the only sun this flat gets before four. The woman downstairs, Mrs Okafor, came up to see what the fuss was and stood there with her hand on her hip saying it looked like a bottle brush with ambitions. She is wrong. Look at the arms of it, Den. One goes up, one goes out, one bends down like it's thinking something over. Dad would have called it show-off.
The thing I can't stop looking at is the paper you wrapped it in. Somebody printed a pattern of stacked triangles on it, orange then pink then a green so bright it hurts, and the dots are packed so close they look like sand when the light moves. I cut that paper out and pinned it up behind the plant. Now every morning I look at the cactus standing straight against all those stripes, like it's the only thing in the room that knows what it's for.
Ring me Sunday. Tell me if the rain in Tucson is still a rumour.
Love, Maureen
