California quail and poppies on a limb

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A plump California quail with its distinctive head plume faces left, its body covered in brown, cream and grey feather detail. Three large orange poppies with green leaves and dark centres surround the bird, framing it against a soft reddish-brown shadow. Bold dark outlines and smooth colour shading give the design a bright, traditional look against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The quail came back on the third morning, shaking the dew off its topknot as if it had paid for the fence rail. Dolores Farrant watched it from the kitchen window with her coffee going cold, and when Tom came in from the ditch she told him the birds had found the poppies. He said quail went where the seed was, the way everybody did out here, and that she should stop naming things she meant to feed.

By May there were six of them, a cock with that black plume and five brown hens who moved through the orange like a slow argument. They ate the seed heads faster than the ditch could grow them. Dolores swore at them every morning and bought millet by the sack from the feed store in town, and Tom pretended not to notice the scoop missing from the bin each evening.

In October the first real rain came early and turned the ditch the colour of strong tea. Dolores went out with a bucket of scrap grain and found the old cock pressed flat beneath the lemon tree, one cream-striped feather lifted by the wet. She sat on the back step until the bucket tipped over, and then she went and got the trowel.

Tom did not sow poppies that spring, and neither did she. The next April the ditch bank went orange anyway, thick and careless, from seed the hens had carried in their crops and dropped along the fence. Dolores stood in it with her boots soaking and counted the flowers, and somewhere under the lemon tree a single dark plume lay where she had pinned it under a stone.
