The sparrow came in off the platform the night the last northbound was cancelled, when the waiting room smelled of wet coats and burnt sugar from the vending machine. I was sweeping under the benches with a broom older than my knees, and she hopped along the tiles as if she had bought a ticket. Mr Okonjo from the newsstand had gone home. Nobody else was left to tell me when the trains would start again.

She kept landing on the brass hook where the lost-property box hangs, looking at me sideways the way my mother used to when I said I was fine. Outside, rain ran down the window in five fat drops that stopped and started, each one catching the platform lamp before it slid to the sill. I had been counting them for an hour. It was the sort of counting that never adds up to anything.

All right, I told her, and I opened the side door onto the car park. The air came in cold and clean, smelling of diesel and cut grass from the verge. I didn't expect her to go. She sat on the hook a long moment, then dropped off it in a low curve over the bins, up past the floodlight, and then she was a small dark stroke against the sodium orange, turning once before she went over the fence.

I stood in the doorway until my hands went numb. Then I went back for the broom, because the floor still needed doing, and because the first train in the morning would bring people who had nowhere to be and wanted somewhere warm to wait. The drops on the glass had all run down by then. The window was clean.
