Camera and forget-me-nots on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A grey SLR camera with a visible lens and the word NIKON on its prism sits at the centre of the design, with two clusters of blue forget-me-not flowers with yellow centres above and below it. The camera is shaded in greys with dark outlines, while the flowers use lighter blue fills and yellow accents. The tattoo is shown on the inner forearm of a hand held in a fist, against a dark workshop background.

The photographer came to Little Heddon the week the river rose, his camera in a case on a leather strap across his chest, and he would not set it down even to eat his bread. He took the miller at his wheel and the schoolmistress at her gate, the vicar with his hat in both hands, and the two Pryce boys fighting on the bridge until they were told to stand still. Each print he left on the mantel of whoever had sat for him, and he charged nothing, which the town did not trust.

He walked the leat every evening with the lens cap in his pocket. Mab Ferrier, who had buried two husbands and kept a sharp tongue for both, asked him what the blue flowers were that crowded the water's edge. Forget-me-nots, he said, and she told him nobody in Heddon forgot anything, that the town had long memories and longer grudges. He only smiled and took her picture beside them, her hand raised as if to shade her eyes.
He left in October on the last carrier cart, the strap worn pale across his shoulder where the weight had sat. Nobody saw him go properly. In the spring the leat bloomed earlier than it ever had, and when the miller's widow opened the drawer where she kept her print of the wheel, she found the picture had changed: the camera was there again, a small sprig of blue tucked beneath its strap, though the man himself had been gone since autumn.
Mab kept hers in the Bible and never once opened it. Every April she still waited for the flowers, and every April they came up, and she said that was the trouble with being remembered by a camera. It never let a thing go.
