Graveyard cameo with roses on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A bare tree, headstones and crosses sit inside an ornate oval frame, with two birds and a pale moon in a teal sky. Two red roses with green leaves overlap the frame at the top and bottom. The shading is soft and smooth, with bold dark outlines and a grey, detailed frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are the last miniaturist on Skerra, and the island only needs you for two things: christenings and burials. The ferry comes on Tuesdays, so when Ailsa Dunn knocks on a Thursday evening, you already know who has died. She sets a tarnished oval frame on your table, its scrollwork black with sea air, and asks for the cemetery on the north slope, the one with the bare sycamore, painted the way it looks when the moon is up.

You tell her the paint needs a dry day. She tells you the boat leaves on Saturday. So you work by the lamp, grinding azurite with a little lead white to make the teal of the sky her husband watched from his creel boat for forty years. You give the crosses their lean and soften the headstones until they seem to sink into the grass. Two crows you paint too small, then too large, then leave where they settle on the branches like full stops.

Iain had asked for one thing only: a rose on each side of the frame, red as the lifeboat's hull. You lay them over the silver, one high where his name would begin, one low beside the stones. The petals take three coats, and between each you sit with your hands open on the table while the wind swings round to the east and the lamp gutters.

On Saturday Ailsa wraps the miniature in oilcloth and holds it up to the window. She says nothing for a long time. Then she tilts it so the moon catches the light, pale and a little too close to the tree. "He always said it looked like it was keeping an eye on the graves," she says. You sign the back with your initials, small, the way you were taught, and wait with her on the pier for the boat.
