Camera with red heart on upper back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, with her hair pulled into a ponytail tied with a red ribbon. A small camera tattoo sits on her upper back, shaded in black and grey with a red heart on the lens and a red strap curling beneath it. The background is a plain grey wall, and the red accents stand out against the otherwise monochrome photograph.

The lens cap had been lost since the spring, so Mrs Okonedo-Pryce's Pentax lived on the hall table with its eye open, staring at the coat hooks. Dan said it was bad luck to leave a camera uncapped in a house with a cat. Dan said a lot of things, most of them about the cat.

I took the thing down on a Tuesday, when the light came slanting through the kitchen window and turned the dust into something you could almost mistake for snow. I wanted one good picture of the back garden before the council came to cut the hedge. The film was Kodak, the last roll in the drawer behind the tea towels, and I had no idea how old it was. I wound the advance lever twice and it clicked like a knitting needle.
The garden came out grey and sulky. The hedge came out grey. The only thing that came out properly red was the ribbon I'd tied round the strap on my wrist, which I had forgotten was there, and which I took off and hung on the lens while I worked out what to do with my hands.
When the prints came back from the chemist on Harcourt Road, the garden was nothing, a blur of privet. But in the corner of the third frame was the lens, with a red ribbon coiled round it like a question mark, and right in the middle of the glass, where the cap should have been, the reflection of a window and somebody's startled face.
I put it on the mantelpiece, next to the clock that's never right. Dan came in, looked at it for a long time, and asked me, without any sarcasm at all, whether I'd finally found the cap.
