Two birds on a wire with a red heart
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
A woman photographed from behind, holding a camera to her face, shows a fine line tattoo across her upper back. The design depicts two small birds on a wire beside a utility pole, with a single red heart above them. The linework is thin and black, with flat red colour used only for the heart, and the plain cream background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Margaret, the lineman came up the Hollins road again this morning and stopped his van right outside our gate, the way he does when he wants me to see him looking at the sky. He says the wire between our pole and the Pritchards' has sagged so low the swallows can sit on it without flying. I told him the swallows have been sitting on it since before either of us was born and he should mind his own business. He laughed and said he'd mind it on Thursday.

You'll want to know about the birds. Father has finally stopped saying they'll fall off and die of boredom. Mother has started leaving crumbs on the porch rail, which she swears is for the sparrows. The two that sit nearest the pole are the same pair who nested under the eaves last summer, and I have decided they are courting, because nothing else in this town looks as hopeful as a bird that has made up its mind.
I meant to post this yesterday but I kept walking down to the corner to see if the telephone man had come back with his ladder. He hasn't. Only the wind, and the wire humming with the weight of all those small birds leaning in toward each other. I think I will send you a photograph of it when Uncle Ray lends me his camera. Tell Joan I still owe her a cake. Write soon, and tell me whether the city has taught you to stop looking up.
