Small camera tattoo on the nape of the neck
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black camera is tattooed centrally on the nape of the neck, seen from behind. The camera has a dark body, a raised viewfinder and a round lens with lighter grey highlights, drawn with clean outlines. The subject sits against a blurred striped background, with the hair in a braided bun above it.

Dear Ruth,

The old camera has been sitting on the kitchen bench since Tuesday, and I still cannot decide whether to send it to the auction man in Leeds or keep it. You know how Dad handled it, cradling the black body like a loaf, always pressing the round lens cap back on before he set it down. I found three films still loaded in the back, the labels in his square capitals: ROWLEY STREET, MARKET DAY, HARVEST. Nobody in Sallow Bridge has seen those pictures printed. I took the rolls to Mr Oakes at the chemist's on the high road, and he says they will be ready Friday if the developer holds.
I went round to the church hall last night to ask Mrs Pell whether the parish still wanted the old projector. She told me Dad had photographed every christening in the valley for thirty years without once being asked. She has a print of the Hollis wedding pinned above her kettle, and the bride is looking straight down the lens as if she knows exactly who is behind it. Everyone in the village knew the sound of his shutter before they knew his voice.
So I am keeping it. I will not hand it to strangers who will put a price on it and forget the hands that held it. Friday I will carry it up the lane, set the tripod by the wall where the hawthorn leans, and make one photograph of nothing much at all, just so the last roll is finished the way he would have finished it.
Come home for the weekend if you can. Bring your own film.
Love, Joan
