Camping scene in a shield frame with maple leaves

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A shield-shaped panel holds a scene of a tent beneath pine trees and a crescent moon, with a second framed view of mountains in shaded greys below it. Bold black outlines define the shapes, and the shading uses soft greys and blends. Red and orange maple leaves surround the panel, with green foliage at the top edge against a striped sleeve and a brick wall behind.

The first frost came early that autumn, so Maud Harrow pitched the tent herself rather than wait for her brother to wake. The canvas smelled of smoke and last week's rain. Beyond the final fence post the pines began, dark as a shut door, and past them the mountains stood up grey against a sky the colour of dishwater.

Long Ashby had one rule older than the church: nobody walked into the pines after the bell. Her grandmother said the trees kept count of anyone who slept beneath them, and called them back at the wrong hour in the voice of someone they loved. Maud had never believed a word of it. She set a battered lamp on the stump where the path began, filled it from the parish tin with its painted shield, and lit it so the village could see she had gone where she meant to go.

Near midnight the crescent moon slid between the branches and something stepped out of the dark at the edge of the firelight. It was a tall man with a red leaf pinned to his collar. He asked, very politely, whether the mountains were still where he had left them. Maud said they were. He nodded as though a debt had been settled, touched the brim of his hat, and climbed back up the slope without once looking behind him.

At first light she found the lamp swept clean and the tin brimming with maple leaves, more than any tree in the parish could have dropped in a night. She carried them down through the pines without speaking. When the bell rang for the hour, she was surprised to find herself counting the windows of the village, the way her grandmother used to, and to find every one of them lit.
