Cabin and pine trees on a calf
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed cabin with a lit window sits at the centre of the design, flanked by pine trees, a crescent moon and stars in the sky. The linework is clean and the cabin, roof and ground are finished with soft grey shading and dark accents. The design is set in black and grey on a calf, framed by the leg and boots against a dark wall.

The lamp in Pale's cabin had been burning since the week the road washed out, and nobody in Harl's Gap would say who lit it. I carry the post up the forestry track on Thursdays, and I had told the postmaster twice that the place stood empty. Edwin Pale went up the ridge in March with his dog and a crate of tinned pears, and only the dog came back down.

That October I took the long way round, past the great grey rocks where the beck runs under the track. The sign over the door still read PALE'S RESTING in letters somebody had painted by hand. The door was unlatched. Inside, a kettle sat warm on the iron range, two cups were set out on the table, and beside them lay a parcel wrapped in brown paper with my name written across it in a hand I knew from twenty years of signed receipts.
I didn't open it. I stood in the doorway while the moon came up over the pines and the stars came out thin and sharp, and I understood that the lamp had never been for Edwin. It was left burning for the post, so that whoever came up the track in the dark would know where the road ended and that someone still expected them.
I sat down, drank the tea and left the parcel where it lay. On the drive back, the cabin light shrank in my mirror until it was only a pinprick between the trunks. Next Thursday I will take the post up again, and this time I will open the parcel.
