Camping scene with tent, fire and pines
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A small line drawing of a camping scene showing a triangular tent with a shaded side, a campfire with curling smoke, three pine trees and a crescent moon. The linework is thin and even, with light hatching on the tent and simple outlines throughout. The drawing is in black ink on a textured white background, with no colour and a centred composition.

"Don't poke the fire with the good spoon," Ada said, and Tom put the spoon down. The smoke had gone straight up all evening, the way it does when the air is still, and the pines stood round the clearing like men waiting for a bus. Tom had come up the valley to mend the fence on the Hollin Moss allotment and had stayed three nights because the rain would not let him go.

On the third night the moon came out thin as a fingernail, and Ada took the lantern off its hook and walked to the edge of the trees. She came back with a tin of peas and a look on her face he had not seen since the winter their dog went through the ice. "There's a light on the Redbrae road," she said. "Been there since Tuesday. Somebody's pitched a tent where the old quarry used to be."
Tom asked who would camp in a quarry in October. Ada said that was what she wanted to know, that the quarry had been shut since her mother was a girl, and that no tent stays upright in that wind unless somebody is holding the pole.
They walked over in the morning with the dew still on the bracken. The tent was there, its shaded side turned to the weather, and inside it the ashes of a small fire sat in a ring of stones. Nobody was in it. Under a stone by the door was a folded note in pencil that said only: Gone to see about the moon. Back when it is full. Keep the fire in for me. Ada laughed until she had to sit on a rock. Tom did not laugh, but he went back the next evening and lit the fire, and every evening after that until the moon was round.
