Mountain and pine forest design

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a cropped mountain landscape with jagged peaks in the distance and rows of pine trees filling the lower half. The forest is built from fine linework and dense stippled dots that create shading and depth. The design is rendered in black ink on white paper, with a plain square composition.

Pell had been dotting the same ridge for three weeks when his nib spat a blot the shape of a lake. He would have scraped it away, but Mrs Okonedo, who owned the stationer's on Fenwick Lane and paid him by the plate, leaned over his shoulder and said the blot looked like somewhere a person could sit down.

So he left it. He worked the pines around the white gap one dot at a time, the way his father had taught him to engrave copper, letting the density carry the dark. Each tree took most of an afternoon. The stipple thickened toward the bottom of the page where the trunks crowded together, and thinned at the peaks, where the rock went pale as bone and the sky had nothing to hold onto.

Ten days later a man in a wet coat came in asking for the survey of the Carrow valley. Pell unrolled the sheet. The man put one finger on the empty patch between the peaks and said, very quietly, that there had been a lake there once, before the mill cut the dam, and that his grandmother used to swim in it.

Pell said nothing about the blot. He rolled the sheet back up, took the man's shilling, and went home to find a fresh nib. Some mornings he still walks the two miles up Carrow Hill to look at the real water, which is smaller than the one on paper, and darker, and does not need him to finish it.
