Candle in a dotted circle on an arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single lit candle in a stepped holder is drawn in thin black outline, with a flame at the top. A ring of small dots surrounds the candle, giving a halo-like frame. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the design is centred on smooth, lightly lit skin against a pale background.

Where the Hollin road crossed the river, there was a toll house with one window, and in that window a candle burned every night of the year. Old Maud Harrower kept it lit. She rolled the tallow herself in the cold months and set the brass stick on the sill at dusk, always inside the ring of white stones she had pulled from the field as a girl, so that anyone coming down the valley in the dark could see where the ford was and where the soldiers were not.

The line between the two kingdoms ran through the middle of that river, and men on both banks came over it with mules, bolts of cloth and things they would not name. The candle told them the path was clear. One autumn a surveyor from the city arrived with a leather ledger and a clerk who coughed. He said a light in a border window was a signal, and signals were forbidden. Maud gave him bread and a bed in the back room, and in the morning she found him standing at the sill with his hand held over the flame, not quite touching it.
That night the candle stayed out. Nobody came down the valley because nobody could see the ford, and by midnight the cold had got into the mules. Maud sat in the dark with her hands in her lap until a child's cry carried up from the water. She lit a spill from the embers, climbed onto the stool, and relit the candle while the surveyor watched from the doorway. He wrote one line in his ledger before he left, and it said only: the light is kept by the woman at the ford.
