Fine line knot and dots on inner arm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single vertical black line runs down the arm with a cluster of looped, knot-like ornaments in its lower half and a small dot above and below. The linework is very thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against a grey top on the left and a dark background on the right.

Ada had counted the marks on the lead line so many times that she could read them in the dark, her thumb moving from one knot to the next as the pilot cutter ploughed through the mouth of the Tyne. Two fathoms, a leather mark. Three, a knot of two loops. The small dots her father had stitched above and below the working length were for shoals nobody had charted, and he had never told her why they were there.

She had been sent out in place of the pilot's boy, who had a fever, and the tide would not wait for anyone. Mr Greaves stood at the rail with his pipe unlit, watching the water turn from green to brown. "Mark it," he said, and she swung the lead forward, let it run out, felt it touch bottom and called the depth before her hand had even finished telling her. Her voice came back to her thin over the wind.
Then the line went slack. The lead came up too fast, and the knots slid through her fingers in the wrong order. Where the dot should have been there was only a frayed end and a gull's feather caught in the twist. She held it up. Greaves took it, turned it over once, and laughed in a way she had not expected.
"Your father always said the dots were for the things you couldn't measure," he said, coiling the rope over his arm. "Hold the tiller, lass. We'll find the channel by the smell of the water."
