Light bulb and geometric diamonds on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a light bulb sits centrally on a forearm, with a thin circle above and two stacked diamond outlines framing the bulb. The linework is fine and precise, and the bulb and the larger circle use soft stippled and shaded tones. The design is centred on a plain pale background with a small x mark below the lower diamond.

Mind the step, love, and keep your hand on the rail, because the lamp-house is down there under the headgear and it still smells of paraffin. Sit where I can see you. I was telling you about Eli Marr before the kettle got in the way. The electric bulbs came to Shaw Colliery in 1921, and the old men wouldn't trust them. A bulb, they said, was a thing that wanted feeding and gave nothing back. So Eli kept the old flame lamps on the racks, but he also kept one bulb hung in the lamp-house, and every morning he'd wipe its glass with his sleeve and look at it the way you'd look at a dog that might bite.

He had a habit of chalking on the whitewash by the door. A circle for the wheel, two diamonds one above the other, one for the cage and one for the prop-timber cut to a point, and at the bottom a small x where the gas had been bad in the spring. The lads laughed at him for it. Then the roof went on the east drift in the February, and eleven men were cut off on the lower level with the flame lamps guttering and the air going thick.
Eli didn't wait for the rescue men to find a rope. He took the bulb off its hook, ran the cable out as far as it would reach, and carried the glass down by hand, step after step, until he stood on the chalk x itself. They say the filament glowed like a coal someone had breathed on. The men followed that small light up the drift one by one, and Eli came up last, with his hand around the bulb.
When they got him to the surface, the glass was still warm, and it never lit again. It's hanging back in the lamp-house now, with the x still on the wall beneath it. Go on down and look, if you like. Mind your head on the beam.
