Dougie had the pale blue saloon running by six, the choke pulled out and the radio switched off, because Maureen had asked for silence for the last forty miles to the coast. She didn't laugh. She watched the hedgerows slide past with her elbow on the sill and the window down an inch, so the air came in smelling of cut grass and wet sheep. At the services near Stroud she bought two teas and a bag of wine gums and set them on the dashboard without a word. Her hands stayed steady until the sign for the bridge, and then she gripped the door handle as if the car might decide to swim.
In the glovebox was a bingo card folded into quarters. On the back, in her father's square capitals, he had written the same line over and over, each time a little smaller, as though he'd been trying to fit it on the card: SIT IN THE SILENCE THEN DRIVE. Maureen read it at the cliff car park while the gulls argued over a chip paper. Dougie didn't ask. He just switched off the engine and let the quiet fill the car.
When she finally turned the key, the saloon coughed once and caught. She pulled out past the bins and the bench with the faded plaque, and for the first time all morning she reached over and turned the radio on, loud, to something with a brass section that made Dougie laugh out loud at last.
