A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The reunion was called for the last Saturday in June, and by seven the village hall smelled of floor polish and warm pastry. Dorothy Scrase had baked the cherry pie herself, the way her grandmother had, and set it on the windowsill where the evening light came through the glaze. Nobody asked why there was a line of coarse salt along the sill, or why the door was propped with a horseshoe. That was how things were done in Coldharrow Fold, and everyone who had been to Harrowgate Primary knew it.

Frank Lacey came late, in a black car so polished that the hall lamps ran along its bonnet like water. Nobody had seen it on the lane before. He stood in the doorway a long while, looking at the salt and the horseshoe, and then he laughed and said the old fears still had their manners. He asked for Dorothy by her schoolgirl name, Dot, and she did not answer to it. Instead she took the pie from the sill and put it in his hands. It was warm, which it should not have been, because she had lifted it from the oven an hour before the car came up the hill.

He ate it standing on the step, and the cream did not run down his wrist. When he was finished he thanked her and walked back to the car without once touching the salt. The engine turned over without a sound. Dorothy watched the taillights go down the lane, dark as coal, and only then did she sweep the salt from the sill with the flat of her hand.

In the morning there was a single cherry stone on the step, and a ring of frost where the car had been parked, though it was June.
