Two feathers tied with a coral bow
Colour · Flash
Two stylised feathers hang from a small coral bow, drawn in gold outlines with teal shading toward the tips. The feathers are filled with gold and teal with white highlights along the quills. Two identical cards sit side by side on a wooden surface, with the design filling most of each white card.

She had two jay feathers pinned in her hair, gold-brown like new bread with teal tips where the bird keeps its brightest colour for flight, and a bow of madder-red ribbon her mother had dyed in the copper pot. The feathers had been found by the mill race that morning. Her mother said a jay's feather brings a dancer's feet, and Tamsin, who had never been let out of the kitchen, wanted feet like that more than anything.

When the church clock struck four, the fiddler finally looked up and said, "Those feathers were promised to me." She tugged the bow loose and held the feathers out. "Then take them," she said, "and I'll keep the dancing." He laughed for the first time that night, and the bow went slack in his hand.
At first light the hall was empty except for a single teal-tipped quill on the sill. Tamsin walked home barefoot, the ribbon in her fist, and in the yard behind the mill a long grey shape was going away over the stubble, tapping out the reel on every gate he passed.
