Colour traditional tattoo of a snapping carnivorous plant above a FEED ME banner on the outer thigh.

Carnivorous plant with FEED ME banner on thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A bold plant with green leaves and a open, toothed red and purple mouth rises from a pot above a red ribbon banner reading FEED ME. Solid black outlines define the shapes, with shading in the leaves and mouth and small droplets of red near the jaws. The design fills the frame vertically against bare skin, with a few small star shapes to the right.

Dear Nell,

The plant from the allotment show has settled onto the kitchen windowsill, right beside the coal scuttle, which Mrs Tonks says is the only sensible place for a thing that eats. Mr Bramley gave it to me for second place in the marrows, and I did not argue, though I still think the marrows were robbed.

It opens its jaws at four o'clock every afternoon, the minute the whistle goes at the Hartley drift. I have timed it. The lower leaves curl up like a pair of hands, the red mouth gapes wide enough to swallow a bluebottle whole, and then it shuts with a click you can hear from the back step. Dad would have laughed himself sick. He always said nothing grew in this village without a bit of soot in it.

Last Tuesday I set a sliver of cold mutton on the sill to see what it would do. It turned its nose up at the mutton and went for the crust I had dropped beside the pot instead. Then it went for the saucer. This morning I found it chewing the corner of the banner I had pinned above the cupboard, the one Ada stitched for the Gala that says FEED ME in red letters. I think it has been reading over my shoulder.

So if you hear I have been ruined by a houseplant, you will know whose fault it is. I am off to the back yard now to catch it a fly, and I am not even sorry. Your loving sister, Mary
