Cartoon bison and flowers on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A two-panel photograph of a forearm tattoo showing a brown cartoon bison-like creature with a large dark nose, curled among teal and orange flowers with green leaves. Bold black outlines and flat fills with soft shading on the creature's body define the forms, and the background is filled with orange tones. Four small square tiles of water, earth, fire and air symbols in red, green, blue and orange sit at the wrist, with the tattoo framed closely in both views.

Hush now, and keep your hands away from the fire, because the bison doesn't care to be poked. Your great-grandmother swore it came down off the moor the winter the beck froze to the bottom, a great shaggy thing with a nose like a wet boot, and flowers growing up its back where the frost had no business being.

Four children lived at Hollin Farm then, and they quarrelled like hens over a single crust. Ada had the water in her, always weeping into the trough. Tom was all earth, stubborn as the clay on his boots. Little Ruth ran about with matches in her coat pocket, and Wil, the eldest, could never stand still long enough for anyone to catch him. The bison came to them on the night the hay ran out. It lay down in the byre with a sigh like a bellows, and it waited for them to stop shouting.

It was Ruth who climbed on first, and the beast rose so smoothly through the rafters that the snow slid off the roof like sugar off a spoon. They went up over the wall, over the church tower and the frozen mere, and the teal flowers on its back opened in the cold, bright as coins. When they came down, Wil was gripping the wind, Tom had mud to his elbows from laughing, Ada was weeping happily into the wool, and Ruth had lit a candle on the creature's ear.

Each of them kept a small square of that light, one tile apiece, and I have never known one to be lost. Now go and fetch the lamp. The bison has been waiting in the byre for you since the snow began, and it does not like to be kept.
