Cartoon cat with heart and wings
Traditional · Back · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon cat with a pink bow on its head sits in the centre, hugging a solid red heart. Two dark grey wings spread out to the left and right, shaded with soft gradients and outlined in bold black linework. The mix of red and pink against the grey and black makes the central figure stand out on the skin.

Dear Ruth, the Bramleys are so heavy this year that Dad's old ladders groan when I climb them, and I have been picking since six every morning so the wasps don't get the windfalls first. My thumb is purple from a bad grip on a branch, but the crates are full and Uncle Len has stopped grumbling about the price of petrol, which is as close to praise as he gets.

You will want to know about the cart. It is still the faded green one with the tailboard, and the cat is still on it. You painted her the summer you were nine and wouldn't go to sleep until she had wings, so she has a pink bow, a red heart held against her chest, and two grey wings sweeping out past the wheels. Most of the paint has gone soft in the rain, but the heart still stands out. Yesterday a lad from the village, Sol Parry, who has been helping with the pickers for a few quid a day, stopped to look at her and asked who had drawn her.
I told him it was my sister, and that she had been very particular about the wings. He said the heart was the only bit that looked fresh, and that he had gone over it with red enamel last week because it kept flaking. I was cross at first, then I wasn't, because he had also matched the bow in the same pink as the blossom on the old tree by the gate. He asked me why the wings were grey and not white. I didn't have an answer, so I told him the truth: you said they were the colour of the sky just before the rain, and I have never once been able to argue with you about it.
Come home for the last pick, if you can. Sol says the cat is good luck. I think he is only being kind, but I have started to believe him.
Love, June
