Black fine line tattoo of two facing profiles forming a heart outline, with a flower and the word love in script, on the upper thigh.

Profile faces in a heart with flower and script

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A single black linework tattoo shows two facing side profiles whose outlines form a heart shape. One profile carries a five-petal flower near the brow, and the word love is written in looping script beneath the heart. The lines are uniform and unshaded, set against smooth, lightly lit skin on the upper thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The band at the Majestic has just stopped mid-bar, and somebody's heel is still clicking on the sprung boards when Ruth Bellamy leans across the lemonade table and tells you that you have ten seconds to decide. You decide in four. Her hand is already out, palm up, the way it was the summer the pier lights failed and everyone ran for the shelter, and you have never once known her to offer anything twice.

The floor is crowded with couples who have been turning the same square since seven. You find your place by the chalk mark near the piano and she settles against you with the careless confidence of someone who has counted every step in advance. "Eyes on me, not your feet," she says, and you obey, because her jaw is set in the stern way it goes when she is keeping time for both of you. The cloakroom bowl of primroses sits on the edge of the stage, and the old attendant watches you both over his spectacles like a man who has seen this before.

The lamp on the balcony rail swings as the band turns into a waltz. For one beat your two profiles fall on the distemper wall, leaning in, noses almost touching, and the shadows meet at the brow and pull into a heart with the lower edge trailing away. Ruth sees it first and laughs, a short surprised sound that makes the couple beside you look round.

When the music ends she takes a primrose from the bowl, snaps the stem short and slides it through the buttonhole of your jacket. "Now the wall has something to remember," she says. The band strikes up again, and the shape on the plaster holds its pose a good while after either of you has moved on.
