The 7.14 has gone without me again, so I am writing on the back of a timetable at the end of platform four, where the tea urn gives off just enough warmth to keep the ink from sticking. You will laugh, but I have finally sold the lace. Mr Ansell at the Dock Street drapers paid four pounds for the whole bolt, the black Nottingham net with the scrolled edge that Mother used to pin on her Sunday hat. He said nobody wears lace like that any more, which is true, and I did not argue.

I kept one length, a yard of it rolled tight in my handbag, because I could not bear to see the last of her work go to a stranger's hem. Yesterday I took it to the stall by the ticket barrier, where a man with a clean white apron and very steady hands sketches on paper before he touches anybody. He held the lace against his table and laughed at how it curled, then drew a peony over it, the big pink kind that Mother grew against the wash-house wall. Every petal was a little damp, he said, as if the morning had only just left it.

So now there is a flower with lace curling beneath it, and I cannot say what I think. Perhaps it is only a pretty thing. Perhaps it is what happens when a woman who made lace for forty years finally decides the pattern can be her own.

The guard is calling. I will post this from Crewe. Come and see it before I lose my nerve.
