Cartoon couple and spider web on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey cartoon tattoo covers the top of a foot, showing a black-haired girl leaning toward a grinning figure in a striped suit, with a spider web spread beneath them. The linework is bold and clean, with solid black areas for hair and stripes and open shading in the faces. A pencil or ink drawing of the same design sits in the top right corner for comparison.

Nobody in Clatterholme had dusted the west stair since the Restoration, so when Agnes Pell climbed it on the Tuesday with a bucket in one hand and a mop in the other, the webs met her at eye level like wet lace. She had been hired by the trust to make the place fit for the tea-room people, and she intended to do it properly, even if the hall ghost had views on the matter.

The ghost was a tall young man in a striped suit who lounged on the newel post and grinned at her with far too many teeth. He called himself Mr Quill, though he showed no interest in writing. Every time she swept a corner, he would sigh, gather the strands one at a time, and pin them across the doorway of the solar in a neat fan, the way a dressmaker lays out pins. 'Dust of the living,' he would say, 'is no proper decoration.' Agnes told him that spiders were not her department.
On the last afternoon, a dark-haired girl in a long black dress came up the stair behind her, perhaps a lodger from the village, perhaps no one at all. She leaned against the striped man's shoulder, studied the web he had strung, then looked at Agnes and said nothing. Mr Quill went very still, then laughed so hard a crack ran down the plaster.
Agnes left the web where it was. In March the trust wrote to ask why the tea room was behind schedule, and she replied that the stair was finished, that the solar had been let to two tenants who paid in pins, and that the lady in black had asked her to leave the window open so the spiders could come and go.
