The hall still smells of floor polish and warm squash, and you have already been handed a name badge with the wrong year printed on it. Across the room Dean Pollard is showing people photographs of a trawler he now owns, waving a paper plate of sausage rolls at you as if the last twenty-five years were a long lunch break.

You don't go over at first. You stand by the glass cabinet and look at the sailing club photo, where you are third from the left, squinting, hair still wet from the Sunday race. Your nan used to say the anchor was there to keep things from drifting, and the lilies were for the people who had gone out past the harbour wall and not come back. She planted them along the yard fence the spring after your grandad's boat was lost, and they came up every June whether anyone was watching or not.

Dean finds you anyway. He doesn't ask about your life. He holds out his phone instead, showing a scanned page of the tide table you both copied onto the back of a maths exercise book, the one with the Tuesday crossed out in red. He says he never worked out which of you had got the sums wrong. You tell him neither of you had, that the water had simply been higher that year. He laughs a little too loudly, the room turns, and you pocket the spare badge with the wrong year on it and walk out past the fence where the lilies are already opening.
