Colour tattoo of a stylised cartoon woman with a hair flower, holding a sword over her shoulder, on the outer calf.

Cartoon woman with sword on calf

Calf · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised cartoon woman in profile, with black hair in a bun decorated with a small flower and a red hair tie. She wears a magenta top with blue shading, a green lower garment and black footwear, and rests a long sword with a gold-coloured hilt on her shoulder. The bold outlines and flat colour fills are set against a plain, pale calf in an indoor setting.

Dear Ruth,

The ice on the top pond held for the first time this week, so the boys have been sliding on it when they should be forking hay to the ewes. Mam would have had the strap out. I haven't the heart, and I suspect you've stopped asking me to be stern with them.

You asked about the sword. It still hangs above the dresser where Grandda put it, wrapped in the oilcloth Aunt Peg used for the bread. Last Tuesday I took it down to oil the blade because the damp gets into everything out here, and I found the hilt was not brass at all but gilded tin, painted over and worn through to grey where a hand had gripped it for years. Nobody ever told me that. I thought we were a family of plain people.

Mr Gorse from the lower farm came by with the post and stood in the yard looking at the frost on the byre roof while I told him. He said his own mother dressed as a soldier for the Whitsun pageant with a broom handle and a cardboard helmet, and she never once let the boys near it. I laughed, though I didn't mean to.

Grandda's sampler is still in the back bedroom. It shows a woman walking out of a village with a sword across her shoulder, black hair pinned up, a red ribbon in it, green at the hem of her skirts. I always thought it was a joke about Aunt Peg. Come at Easter and we'll look at it together. Bring the good scissors.

Love, Nell
