Cartoon fairy and speech bubble behind the ear

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small cartoon-style fairy with a shaded glowing core and a trail of sparkles sits behind the ear, with a speech bubble reading 'Hey, listen!' beside it. The linework is bold and clean, with soft grey shading on the fairy's body and wings. The photograph shows the side and back of a blonde-haired head against a dark background.

Nobody in the Kingdom of Marrowmere has ever listened to a fairy the first time, which is why I have to say everything twice, and sometimes three times, and once, to a goose, forty-one times. 'Hey, listen!' I shout, so often that my voice has worn a groove in the air above the castle wall. Sir Corwin Vell is the worst of them. He rides out each morning on a grey mare called Biscuit and never once looks up.

The trouble that morning was the bridge over the Lowmere. Its middle plank had gone soft as bread, and the miller's cart was due across before noon with forty sacks of flour. I flew at Sir Corwin's helmet, trailing so much gold dust that he sneezed twice and nearly lost his lance. 'Your bridge,' I told him, 'is a biscuit.' He thought I meant his horse's breakfast and rode straight on.

I had to be cleverer. I fetched the lamplighter's bell from the gatehouse and rang it until the swans came up out of the reeds, then perched on the mare's ear and whispered the truth to her instead, because horses, I have found, are more sensible than knights. Biscuit stopped dead at the edge of the planks and would not move another hoof.

Sir Corwin swore, climbed down and stamped on the board. It cracked straight through beneath his boot. He stood in the water to his knees, soaked and furious, and looked up at me with the expression of a man who has finally heard something. 'Well,' he said. 'That was rather a lot of sparkle for one plank.' I told him it was the first sensible thing I had heard him say all year, and I did not intend to let him forget it.
